Milky Chance - Living In A Haze Tour

Lined up on both sides of the doors of The Enmore Theatre in Newtown, Sydney on Tuesday night was a mixed bag of people, with ages ranging from the just legal to the middle age, everyone was here for the same thing to see one of the most successful bands to ever come out of Germany, Milky Chance.

Warming up the crowd was Western Australian producer, singer/songwriter, GoJo with his distinctive sound of rocky pop and his Freddy Mercury vibed stage presence. GoJo and his charismatic band belted out his most streamed songs including Ship In A Bottle, Loverman and Mrs Hollywood. GoJo crisscrossed the stage with his slick dance moves delivering tracks Missing You, and his track about being cheated on, Better Off before bringing out the delightful Lola Scott to join him for their Triple J Like a Version cover of Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream. Ripping off his embroidered vest to the delight of many in the audience, he finished his set with Fleetwood Mac’s Dreams and his track Double Down to an array of phone lights creating a beautiful picture for his viewing point on centre stage.

After a short intermission allowing punters to grab a fresh drink and some of the great merch on sale in the lobby, it was time for who everyone had come here to see Milky Chance. The band from Kassel took to the stage to a roaring crowd, kicking off their set with Synchronize, Ego, Blossom and Purple Tiger. Frontman Clemens Rehbein was a ball of non-stop energy kicking his way across the stage as the band delivered songs from across all four of their albums including Golden, Living In A Haze, Down By The River and Cocoon before dropping their cover of the the generationless Tainted Love from their covers album Trip Tape.

The band’s latest single Reckless Child really got the crowd going before a change of pace with Bassist Philipp Dausch was keen to play a love song so before launching into Loveland he reminded the crowd to “keep them close” before dedicating the song with “For You My Love” which was accompanied by an epic mouth organ solo by Antonio Greger. From that point in the night hit after smash hit was delivered by the high school friends with Don’t Let Me Down, Flashed Junk Mind, and Stolen Dance being enthusically sung along by all in the theatre before the band left the stage.

The fans, hungry for more started the “Milky Chance” chant and the German lads obliged coming back out to play Colorado, Running and Sweet Sun before treating the crowd to a range of souvenirs from guitar picks to sweaty towels.

Now at this point, I think I must disclose I love Milky Chance and have done since Sadnecessary was released in 2013 but this was the first time I had the absolute pleasure of seeing them live and I was anything but disappointed. if I’m honest seeing them live has only made me love them more. It’s not always the case when you wait so long to see someone live, often you can be disappointed because you have waited so long and built the moment up so much in your head. I was not disappointed, I was blown away!! Milky Chance live is like listening to a Milky Chance album at home just so much BETTER!! While it may be a few years before they return to our shores for their next tour, I urge you to go and see them. Even if you're not a fan per se but just a fan of great alt-rock music or indie-folk-rock, get yourself a ticket, it will be the best money you ever spend.

Thankyou to Milky Chance, GoJo and Untitled for gifting us a night we will never forget.
