Indigo Starlight are set to reach new altitudes

Australian duo Indigo Starlight have burst onto the Electronic Music scene with the release of their debut song ‘Can You Hear Me’. The track has been recorded and released via MaRLo’s Reaching ALTITUDE record label and comprises luscious vocals and emotive breakdowns, slamming kicks and banging basslines, making this track one you’re sure to hear in clubs around the country. We caught up with the ladies to chat about the conception of Indigo Starlight, ‘Can You Hear Me’, and find out how they made that career-changing connection with Reaching Altitude

For those who haven’t heard your music before, how would you describe the Indigo Starlight sound?

It has the perfect combination of emotion and melodies that drive through to a heavy drop. We absolutely love the melodic elements and meaningful, honest lyrics, and we try to emphasise that in our songs and our passion for harder dance music.

You have just dropped your debut single 'Can You HearMe'. Tell us about your new song. What was the inspiration for writing this track?

Can You Hear Me is a very personal song to us, it’s about losing someone and ultimately losing yourself in the process. It touches on questioning your self-worth and just feeling like you’re not good enough. We wanted to write something honest and raw that people could relate to but we also wanted to use this as a form of self-expression for how we had been feeling. We drew inspiration from a time in both our lives when we had both gone through similar situations, so it was really easy for us to write. We’re very big on melodies and emotional lyrics and wanted to showcase that and tie it in with a hard-hitting drop.

MaRLo has been known as such a huge name and is an incredibly talented artist, so to know our track was being released on his label was absolutely insane

'Can You Hear Me' has been released via Reaching Altitude, EDM heavyweight MaRLo's recording label, how did you manage to get signed to such an incredible label for your debut?

We submitted Can You Hear Me to MaRLo’s label through their online demo submission portal and honestly just kept our fingers crossed and hoped for the best. When we found out that they wanted to sign it, there was a FaceTime call between us with one speechless and lost for words, and the other in tears (happy tears). It was such a big deal to us and was so surreal to know our debut track was going to be signed to Reaching Altitude. Since we started in this industry, MaRLo has been known as such a huge name and is an incredibly talented artist, so to know our track was being released on his label was absolutely insane. Definitely a pinch-us moment.

What is like to work for an EDM giant like MaRLo? Do you at all feel intimidated when you take him a track you have written and want to record?

It’s a huge honour to be on MaRLo’s label. I don’t think we’ll ever forget the day we found out Can You Hear Me was going to be signed and are so grateful for the opportunity the label has given us. We had so many nerves sending the track to Reaching Altitude. MaRLo has some of the most incredible tracks to date so sending him something we had written and also having Christine singing on the song was really big for us. We put everything into our music, so having a label like Reaching Altitude support and release the song is so surreal.

Any chance of an Indigo Starlight & MaRLo collab any time soon?

We can only hope so! We’re just working on some more music in the meantime, so will see where that takes us!

You have played big festivals like It's The Ship in Singapore and Ultra here in Australia, what were those like for you as newcomers to the circuit? What did you learn from these experiences?

We've actually been performing for a while, but only in the past few years, we've been able to showcase what our brand is really about. These festivals were some of the biggest gigs we’ve played to date, with It's The Ship, Singapore being our first-ever international festival which was crazy! The whole experience was insane and it taught us to just be ourselves. When you enjoy what you do and are passionate about the music that you play, the performance speaks for itself. We are always so grateful for the opportunities we get, and we'll never forget these experiences.

Are there more festival appearances coming up? What festivals would be on your wish list to play?

Not at the moment, but hopefully soon! We have a lot of goals and festival dreams to tick off, but Tomorrowland and EDC are on our bucket list, so hopefully one day in the future we can play there.

We really understand each other and encourage each other to be the best versions of ourselves
— Indigo Starlight

How did the two of you meet? What made you decide to release as a duo as opposed to two individual artists?

We met in high school back in Year 7. We didn’t hit it off as friends at first (one of us was actually really shy) but eventually we became inseparable. We’re basically like sisters now and have been best friends for 17 years! We actually used to DJ solo, and always joked and said we’d NEVER DJ together because we literally went to school together, went to Uni and did the same degree together, had the same friends, and went everywhere together, so we were adamant on that at first, but everyone seemed to love the energy we’d have when playing 'back to back'. Eventually, we gravitated towards being in a duo and incorporated Christine's talent of playing the piano to bring a live element to our shows with the Keytar. We’ve both been writing since we were young, and have been heavily influenced by the music world, so working together is honestly a dream. We really understand each other and encourage each other to be the best versions of ourselves, so being able to release music with your best friend is a dream come true. Why have one brain when you can have two?!

Who in your crew or team deserves a shout-out but never gets one? And what is it they do that keeps your world turning?

Aside from the amazing crew at Reaching Altitude who have been so helpful and supportive throughout the whole process of releasing this song, we’d have to say our family and close friends. We are always really focused on Indigo Starlight, whether it’s studio time, working on crafting our sound and sets, or travelling for shows, we don’t always have time to spend with them. So, their being extremely understanding and supportive really means the world to us and keeps us going. Also... each other! It can be really overwhelming at times, so we’re incredibly lucky to have each other throughout this journey. Sometimes travelling can be lonely and we always acknowledge how grateful we are to be experiencing this together and keeping each other grounded and comfortable.

What's next for Indigo Starlight? What can fans look forward to in 2024?

More music, definitely! We have so much more to share, and this really is the beginning of many more releases. We're also working on really cementing our brand in the harder dance music scene which we are so passionate about. We have a lot more to do, and a lot more to say so that's our aim in 2024 onwards.
