The Wailers - 50 Years Of Positive Vibration

The Wailers’ “50 Years of Positive Vibration” tour opened in Australia with a stunning first night at Drifters Wharf on April 1st, delivering a performance that felt almost fated in its energy and impact. From the moment the band launched into Lively Up Yourself, the atmosphere was electric—an unmistakable sense that something special was unfolding.

On stage, the current Wailers lineup was exceptional, led by bassist and bandleader Aston Barrett Jr., carrying forward the legacy of his father. The guitar work was sharp and exhilarating, cutting through the mix with expressive, rhythmic flair, while the rhythm section locked into deep, hypnotic grooves that drove the entire set. At the forefront, Mitchell Brunings delivered an energetic and commanding vocal performance, channeling the spirit of the originals while making the songs his own. Adding another layer of brilliance, the two female backing singers brought extraordinary vocals and dynamic, captivating dance movements, lifting the energy on stage and enhancing every chorus with soulful precision. The keys and additional backing harmonies layered the sound with warmth and depth, creating a rich, immersive live experience.

The audience responded instantly, bouncing, swaying, and singing along with every word as the band moved seamlessly through a catalogue of reggae classics. No Woman, No Cry became a unifying moment, voices rising together in a powerful chorus, while Three Little Birds brought a warm, uplifting calm that washed over the venue.

The set built toward a fiery close with Get Up, Stand Up, before the band returned for four encore tracks that cemented the night as unforgettable. It was a performance that felt bigger than nostalgia—alive, urgent, and deeply connected—easily one of the best shows this writer has ever witnessed in Australia.

Strong support came from Dom Diaz and Cool Hand Luke, both delivering standout sets that warmed the crowd and set the tone for the night ahead. Their performances ensured the energy was already surging before the headline act even hit the stage.
