No Longer FRIENDLESS
FRIENDLESS’s latest offering of ‘Left 2 Right’ is already proving to be a crowd pleaser for old and new fans as well as radio stations across the country. Filled with his signature catchy melodies and quirky fun, BIANCA’s hypnotic vocals and FRIENDLESS’ perfectly executed production they are keeping the Summer vibes rolling on. We got the opportunity to ask FRIENDLESS about ‘Left 2 Right’ , the collaboration with BIANCA and his one of a kind Chuck Taylor’s.
2020/21 were years full of uncertainty and change, for some the years came as a blessing for some a curse. How do you rate your Covid Years?
Great question! It was such a confusing time. Partly a relief that the world slowed down and we could hop off the hustle to an extent but obviously the financial hardship and uncertainty was very damaging too. Professionally it made me focus on what I really wanted to achieve and in a lot of ways I have ‘levelled up’ in my proficiency as a producer, the downside being I lost a lot of forward momentum. All in all I consider myself very lucky to have been able to weather the storm and come out the other side with my health and a renewed appreciation for my art.
Are you glad to be getting back to performing in front of real crowds, now the restrictions are easing across the country?
ABSOLUTELY!! I played my first packed dance floor last weekend and it was a MOOOOOOD!!!
You have just released your song , Left 2 Right, featuring BIANCA, what can you tell us about the song? is there a message you're hoping people get from it?
In the first phase of the pandemic I was making very serious, darker music kinda reminiscent of my singer/songwriter days whereas 2021 saw me focus more on the positives, hopeful vibes. L2R is essentially a love song but an infectious bop that makes you wanna move and that’s just what we need.
How did the pairing of FRIENDLESS and BIANCA come about?
Bianca and I have moved in the same circles for some time now but for some reason hadn’t released a track together. We bumped into each other in the brief respite we had last year on a boat party and both decided it was about time we worked together. One session later we had this tune!
Left 2 Right; has been added to a bunch of radio station rotations, does that ever come as a surprise for you when you hear your songs on the airwaves? but also the trusted support you receive from this influential sector?
It never gets old and is ALWAYS flattering to have people curate your music into their playlists. In such a saturated market it is SUCH an honour and something I never take for granted.
You have such a big personality of humour and colour that would be great viewing, the question must be asked why you don't you do videos to accompany your songs?
hahah Thank YOU! I usually do but the last few records have had budget constraints due to the pandemic :( Head to Friendless Official on YouTube to see some of the clips I have done over the years!
Speaking of colour, you recently posted a photo of your favourite pair of shoes, a one off pair of Chucks , for those who don't know tell us why this pair is so special and are you in talks with the company for future new designs?
That would be a dream! Yes, these shoes are definitely my favourite! My kids personalised a pair of white Chuck Taylors for my birthday this year and they are just amazing!
Your song Drip was recently selected by Aussie band The Jungle Giants as the winner of the Smirnoff Ads For their Advertising campaign, was this something you entered or had to be nominated for?
Funnily enough I had no idea but my collaborator Jannah had submitted the track and I only found out when we’d been selected!! I was so stoked. Thanks to Jannah for having her ear to the ground!!
What was your reaction to winning? and does it come with any Smirnoff based perks or a lifelong supply?
ANY time someone champions your art it is such a blessing and a great feeling! I wish I had a lifetime’s supply of vodka haha
What’s been the highlight in your career so far personally? And why?
Way way way too hard to pinpoint really! I just love the journey, good and bad and particularly like all the amazing people I’ve had the pleasure of working with
FRIENDLESS is just one of your personas/projects. Do you have multiple monikers to compartmentalise the project? and to keep the individuality of each style/sound?
Absolutely!! Though I’m finding myself concentrating on Friendless more and more now that the project is growing and giving me more of a creative outlet
In your journey as a performer/group/musician have you changed? Is life much different for you from when you started out?
Omg everything has changed! From the way we record music to the way we perform music AND especially how we consume music. It’s not better, it’s not worse it’s just different. Change excites me so it suits me just FINNNNE!
Who in your crew or team deserves a shout out but never gets one? And what is it they do that keeps your world turning? Last time we spoke it was your manager who got the shout out so who gets it this time?
I think my Videographer/Photographer and more importantly friend Eric aka E deserves the shoutout this time. He makes my #content POP and I love him as an artist and a human
What"s next for FRIENDLESS? What can fans look forward to for the rest of the year?
Such an exciting one! 4 Track EP coming up in April then a national tour and hopefully a plethora of singles to round out the year!!
