Bass in The Grass is Darwin’s biggest popular music festival brings an event to the top end with a curated list of artists and bands other states take for granted. The 23rd edition of Bass In The Grass is set to take place on the 16th of May at Mindil Beach, NT, with a giant roster of artists and bands from a variety of genres. We caught up with the teenage, viral sensation Maple from Maple’s Pet Dinosaur, who is performing at the festival, to find out about her Bass In The Grass preparations, what fans can look forward to and who she would like to join on stage from the extensive lineup.
You are one of the acts announced for the Bass In The Grass Festival happening in Darwin on the 16th of May. Are you looking forward to joining the huge lineup for the Mindil Beach event?
The line up is epic, the location is incredible and I’ve never been to Darwin before so I’m pinching myself. Bass In The Grass is iconic and I’m hella excited to be a part of it.
How do you prepare yourself for a festival event like Bass In The Grass?
I’ve been doing a bit of cardio training because it’s such a big stage so I need to be fit enough to move around it and sing at the same time haha. I’ve also been preparing diligently by researching the food truck situation because I’m heaps excited to hang out at the festival all day and eat good food while we watch all the other artists.

What can punters expect from your upcoming performance at Bass In The Grass? Any covers or surprises?
I have a couple of new songs from my debut EP that we are premiering in the set for the Darwin peeps. I also have a couple of awesome new members in the live band and we’ve been having the best time in the rehearsal room so excited to absolutely rip with them live at Bass In The Grass.

If you could jump on stage and collaborate with any artist or band from the Bass In The Grass line-up, who would it be and why?
Ok this is hard because they’re all so awesome but it would be an absolute dream to collab with Denzel Curry. I love the way he bends styles and brings crazy energy and attitude to everything he does and as a young artist I find that creative freedom super inspiring.
Is there a song from your back catalogue you always include in a festival set and if so why?
I only released my first song in August last year so I’d don’t have much of a back catalogue haha, so I’d have to say my first single ‘lego’ because it helped get me in such a privileged position to be playing epic festivals like Bass In The Grass and travelling the country with my friends playing music.
What's your favourite festival memory either as a scheduled act or as an attendee?
When we played Good Things festival in December last year I got to watch TOOL’s headline set side of stage and it was spiritual. There was a storm rolling in across Brisbane and the band were absolutely on fire, it showed me how high the bar is and I found it super motivating.
Do you have a message for the punters who are heading to Bass In The Grass?
My message to the punters at Bass In The Grass is to make sure they come check out Maple’s Pet Dinosaur and most importantly come and say hi to me and the band when we are hanging out and soaking up the killer NT vibes and artists afterwards- we will be bringing stickers too!
