Boone is Good 4 Me

Australian dance artist Boone who is known for his total disregard for the rule book when it comes to making music has just released his new song ‘Good 4 Me’ via TMRW Music. The new track has been weaved together to create a hypnotic piece of music that oozes a timeless quality but also serves as the perfect welcome for listeners to the world of Boone. We caught up with the talented EDM wizard to discuss ‘Good 4 Me’, how he makes his music and the magic sweet spot.

What EDM genre classification do you give yourself for those that haven’t seen you play?

Alternative dance music/House

You have just released your new track 'Good 4 Me' Tell us about the new song.

I’d describe GOOD 4 ME as pretty weird and bouncy with dark undertones. People are describing it as “fast-paced and bright” which is funny because 134 bpm is the new 128 bpm and even though sonically the track has a nice shiny sheen on the top end, the chord progression adds a lot of ‘dark’ energy and weight to the lick. This song went through heaps and heaps of versions where I just took the vocal and made a completely new song around it. After plenty of nights pulling my hair out, we decided the original demo was the best.

for the time being, new original music is the focus to exhibit some of the different colours to this current Boone sound.

Is 'Good 4 Me'  a stand-alone single or are there remixes to follow?

It’s going to be a standalone single! Primarily because we’re raring to get some even newer tracks out. GOOD 4 ME has a really strong vocal and down the road we could get some amazing producers to bring some ‘club-tool’ energy to the song that it really deserves. But for the time being, new original music is the focus to exhibit some of the different colours to this current Boone sound.

You very successfully recreate and blend parts of other people’s songs, how do you decide which tracks to use?

Thank you. Whatever is part of my world at the time becomes embedded in the song like a sonic time stamp. I literally have a list in my iPhone notes filled with things that catch my ear during my day. If I hear an evocative vocal melody or a dark chord progression while driving, I write them down in my notes. I will whip out Ableton later and audition all these elements together, trying them in different ways like a mixing pot until a ‘core idea’ emerges.

You are described as having "an almost punk like disregard for the rule book" when it comes to recreating music, do you think this anarchist approach helps to keep that individuality when working on previously released music?

I always had the mentality of “steal like an artist.” It turns out—  if you steal just the right amount of elements from everywhere— it begins to form something brand new.

Who in the music world would you like to see have a crack at re-inventing  'Good 4 Me'?

Calvin Harris would have a thing or two to teach me. He would take the vocals in the strongest possible direction while filling the track with heaps of hooks to make for the most efficient song.

It’s important to me that the songs have a strong vocal presence and pop-titude mixed with unlikely/expensive sounding sounds.

Your bio says you have string of releases incoming, what can fans of 'Good 4 Me' look forward to?

Fans can expect a further push into unique textures/soundscapes and wayyyy bigger hooks. It’s important to me that the songs have a strong vocal presence and pop-titude mixed with unlikely/expensive sounding sounds. This to me, is the magical sweet spot.

Living or Dead, who would be your ultimate Collab Partner and why?

Tony Soprano. He’s a singer or something right...?? Ahh idk.

We are rapidly approaching Australia's Festival season. Will fans be able to see you on the Festival circuit this summer? Can you confirm any festival appearances for our readers?

I cannot confirm nor deny :)

Who in your crew or team deserves a shout-out but never gets one? And what is it they do that keeps your world turning?

My brother Owen who is busy studying psychology but still takes the time to pull out an Airpod and listen to my ramblings. He helps me formulate a scurry of ideas into actionable plans and tells me if my melodies are whack. I always show him my demos like: “Is there something here??”. “Hmmmmm… It’s too confusing” he responds.

What's next for BOONE? how is the end of 2023 shaping up for you?

More and more song releases with compounding quality. Going crazy on social media, really leaning into Tik Tok and utilising it as the powerful audience-reaching tool that it is. Sharpening my brand so that how I carry myself online/my content/my image mirrors my music. Also, playing some shows!
