CYRIL's gift To The World
Australian DJ and record producer CYRIL has dropped his new EP ‘To The World’. CYRIL’s new body of work houses 6 unique and totally authentic CYRIL tracks, fusing bluegrass and country sounds with organic electronic production and emotive vocals, the EP contains songs ‘Before I Let You Go’ with MarcLo, ‘Put Your Records On’ and CYRIL’s own spin on America’s ‘A Horse With No Name’. We got the opportunity to chat to the multi-skilled musician and we asked him about the new music, his thoughts on AI and that Tomorrowland injury.
Firstly, congratulations on the release of your new EP To The World, what can listeners look forward to when they press play?
I hope it takes them on a journey through various genres and sounds that have helped shape who I am as an artist.
Is To The World an evolution or a continuation of your From Down Under EP you unveiled in June?
I've never shared this before, but originally, we planned to release just one EP. However, as we were finalizing it, we realized we had about 10 songs, which is more suited for an album. So, we decided to split it into two EPs instead.
Most artists leave years between EP/Album releases, why did you want to drop these two so close together?
This sort of ties in with the above, but I produced/wrote a lot of this music in a similar timeframe, so if you listen to the EPs, you don't see a big difference in the quality of production, but for my next one, I'll definitely give it some space between.
Do you have a favourite track off To The World or one that stands out for you?
Each record holds a special place in my heart, but "Dance Like U" with Riley Pearce stands out due to its deep emotional connection. When I was homeless, Riley's music provided solace, and collaborating with him has been an incredible experience.
When you're writing a song where do you draw inspiration from?
My inspiration often varies depending on my mood, influenced either by events in my life or the emotions evoked by people I collaborate with.
You've collaborated with MarcLo, Blair and Good Humans, who else is on your wish list to work with?
I recently remixed a track for Teddy Swims, who is an incredibly nice guy. I'm also a big fan of Fred Again, John Summit, and Dom Dolla, and would love the opportunity to collaborate with them.
You have been playing some big clubs, and your set to play some even bigger Shows (supporting KYGO) and festivals over summer. Do you have a preference when it comes to the types of events you play?
Regarding performances, I don't have a specific preference. Each show brings its own unique vibe. I love the exhilarating atmosphere of large festivals with their massive crowds. However, there's something special about the intimate, underground feel of a small club with a low ceiling, where it's dark and sweaty.
You were supposed to play this year's Tomorrowland but you hurt your leg, what happened there and how is the recovery going?
Honestly, it was pretty f**ked. My manager, my agent, and I were watching Will Sparks, then we were walking to the Library (2nd main stage) to go see Netsky, who's a friend of mine. On the way, we passed the dubstep stage, which was like this cool water stage, and as I was walking down the tiniest hill, I slipped and boom.
Recovery is good. I feel like a lot of the hard part of it is done now it's just about getting back to 100%
Without naming names what’s the craziest or funniest thing you have seen happen backstage at a festival?
Well, breaking my ankle in the middle of the biggest festival in the world was definitely the craziest thing I’ve seen happen and it wasn’t even backstage haha.
What's the best and the worst part of touring and being on the road?
The best part is meeting new people, whether it's at shows, with artists, or experiencing different cultures all over the world. The worst part would be missing my family and my dog
As an electronic music artist, what are your thoughts on AI and is there a place for it in the industry?
If it can help musicians make better music, I like it. I understand there are sides to it that could affect the industry in a bad way, but I remember when streaming came along, everyone thought it was going to ruin the industry.
Do you think the 25% minimum quota of Australian music on our radio stations is a fair number given the ever-expanding talent pool we have in this country? Would you like to see that number increased or even a dedicated Aussie station?
I love hearing new music on the radio, whether it's Sabrina Carpenter or Benson Boone, but when I go overseas, I feel like in Europe, especially, they support their artists so much. So, the more Aussie music, the better, and as a country, I feel like Australians always get behind other Australians whether it's the World Cup, Olympics, or anything.
Who in your crew or team deserves a shout-out but never gets one? And what is it they do that keeps your world turning?
Honestly, there are so many. My manager Spags, who handles as much as possible so I can just focus on music and playing shows. My project manager from Spinnin', Natalia, really makes sure things internally at the label are working, and my family, of course, who are always there for a FaceTime or call
Do you have a message for the legions of CYRIL fans and supporters?
Just, I appreciate everyone's support and I hope I can meet every single one of you!
