Draw 4... Dear Sunday

Newcomers DEAR SUNDAY who released their psychedelic new single Teleport in October and now the boys are set to release their debut EP, Draw 4, which drops November 12th. Draw 4 is a versatile, mature and fascinating debut from the sun-soaked WA locals. As the Dear Sunday boys prepare to hit the road with shows moving through Perth, Margaret River and Albany. in November and December we grilled them about their start in the industry, what the song and EP means to them and their hopes to collab with Ocean Alley and Flume one day.

For those that haven’t heard your music before, how would you describe your sound?

Describing our sound is pretty tough as it just stems from having a really great time.  However, if we had to describe our sound, I’d say it's another evolution of Australian Surf Rock.  Always having fun is pretty much the mantra of the band, so we’ve dabbled in D&B, and there may even be a couple of collabs in the electronic/pop genres in the works. All in all… let’s say our sound is ‘Dear Sunday’ - haha.

Tell us about your new song ‘Teleport’?

The lyrics and the meaning behind Teleport is about wanting to run away. Just leave behind all the bs that’s going on and go somewhere far far away. I remember slaving away at work, probably digging holes and humming the vocal hook “I wanna teleport with you”, then quickly chucking it into my voice memos on my phone. That evening we all got together & wrote the whole track. It’s one that we had a lot of fun creating, and we are super happy with how it sounds and reckon it’s a great track to drink a few beers to on a Summer’s day.

What does the song mean to you?

Teleport is weird, because most lyrics I write come from experiences or memories, but with this one it was almost like an idea or a vision that I had where I am comforting my partner in the early hours of the morning after a night out. It’s a bit bizarre that it could inspire a whole song, but it’s probably the emotional side of my songwriting really showing through.

What can fans expect from the EP Draw 4?

In perfect Dear Sunday fashion, there is a whole lot going on haha. It’s a 4 track EP that we all hope listeners find fun & sad, something you can mosh with your friends to a festival & equally something you get into your feels with and stare blankly at the walls of your bedroom. It’s our first multi track release, and we think it perfectly defines who we are.

Who came up with the name and concept for the cover art for the EP? Any memorable moments during the making of it?

Well we were originally going to call it ‘First’ as we couldn’t come to a conclusion with any other names haha. Thought it was funny because it actually was our ‘first’ EP and our ‘first’ tour, but that quickly changed when we started taking photos.

Our lovely manager Cohen went and bought a whole heap of random colourful props as the original plan was to all lay in a bath full of Fruit Loops hahaha.

In that assortment of things was a deck of ‘Uno’ cards and I was just holding the Draw 4 card. Kinda did the maths and realised that we have 4 stops on the tour, 4 songs on the EP and there’s 4 of us in the band. The rest is history.

You're hitting the road in November for Four shows in Western Australia, is this the first time you have toured and are you excited?

We sure are! This will be our first time doing our own little WA tour. Excited is an understatement. Can’t wait to get on the road and make some funny stories to brag about to our future grandkids.

How did Dear Sunday come about, what are the origins of the band?

Pretty much, the band started from us being mates & partying together.  We all started getting together & jamming to some song I’d written, and the songs started pouring out pretty seamlessly.  As is typical of DS, there wasn’t a whole lot of effort, and it was a heap of fun - just mates hanging out really.  In terms of the name ‘Dear Sunday’ actually came from a friend of the band. I think he saw an Instagram story of someone who might’ve had a couple too many the night before and she wrote “Dear Sunday: I hate you”, and bang, we had a name.

Do you play a part in the production side of your music?

Eh of course! We’ve got a really close relationship with our producer Andy Lawson and can’t thank him enough for what he does and how he steers our ship haha. Andy does all the producing side of things but we all put our little brains together to get the result we’re after.

Who do you credit as your musical influences?

All of the boys have very different influences and I think that’s how we found the sound that comes with DS

· Eligh (drums);

· Mason (lead guitar);

· Calvin (bass); SRV, Lynyrd Skynrd and The Angels

· Ben (lead vocals / rhythm guitar); Ocean Alley, Sticky Fingers.

Will you be Collabing in the future? Who would you love to do a song with?

In perfect DS fashion we’ve got some secrets that only time will telllll.

We’re always open to doing songs with other artists. But to name a few of big dreams would be; Ocean Alley, Tame Impala, Flume & Boo Seeka

Who in your crew or team deserves a shout out but never gets one? And what is it they do that keeps your world turning?

Our manager Cohen bloody Chapman. Our glue and the man that keeps our busy uneducated minds at ease. He is the perfect balance between friend and manager. Never ever steps on our toes, always keeps us in the loop, but keeps us moving forward in an orderly fashion. We owe him the world and DS wouldn’t be the same without him.

What can we expect from Dear Sunday as 2022 approaches?

We’ve got more songs ready to record than you can poke a stick at. So be ready for lots of new music, Collabs, tours, the lot. Buckle up. We’re only getting started.
