Dreaming with Flynn Gurry
Aussie singer-songwriter Flynn Gurry is basking in the success of his most recent single ‘Don’t Stop Dreaming’. The track which is delivered with an accompanying music video, was written by Flynn and produced by Joel Quartermain (Eskimo Joe, Meg Mac, Dan Sultan) and Edwin White (Vance Joy, Amy Shark, Fergus James),and marks his first released via since signing to ABC Music. We caught up with Flynn to chat about ‘Don’t Stop Dreaming’, the importance of the people you work with and what he bought with his first music pay check.
Flynn, you have just unveiled your latest single 'Don't Stop Dreaming', Tell us about your new song. What did the writing/creative process look like for this one?
This song was written post-come down from my first big tour. The last show I had played on that tour is still one of my most memorable shows and I had begun writing the lyrics in the green room whilst the headline band was playing.
Do you have a particular part of the song that you listen out for or resonates more for you?
I love the beginning of the song and how it really sets the intention in the first 10 seconds.
'Don't Stop Dreaming' is delivered with an accompanying music video, who came up with the concept for the visualizer? Were there any memorable moments during the making of it or challenges you faced?
Michael Peters directed and came up with the concept of using my nephew to essentially play a younger “flynn”. We filmed in South West Victoria so the weather is always a challenge as you never really know what your going to get - we were delayed a few times as we need the right light for the sunrise scene.
Will the new track feature on a future album or EP? If so, when can fans expect that to be released?
Absolutely! This is the first single of the next project and hopefully this year I will release a body of work.
For this song you worked with an impressive group of talented creatives including Joel Quartermain and Edwin White, what was the experience of teaming up with these great minds like?
They are incredible to work with. I’ve been such a fan of both of their work, it was such an awesome experience working with them on this song. More to come!
How important is it to the finished product to have the right team behind you?
Hugely important I think regardless of if it is a big team or just supportive friends. Releasing your art can be incredibly terrifying.
“I’m on the same label as the Wiggles! Bucket list moment right there”
You have recently been signed a new deal with ABC Records, with 'Don't Stop Dreaming' being your first release under their banner. What does having the support of a massive entity like ABC behind you mean to you both personally and professionally?
Personally I have been able to meet everyone and they are all just such lovely people and so I am just so grateful to be working alongside people who believe in my music. Professionally it’s awesome - technically I'm on the same label as the Wiggles! Bucket list moment right there.
How did you get your start in music?
Growing up in a country town basically if you play guitar and sing pretty quickly you're put in the corner of the pub underneath the tab screen. So my start was local markets, pubs ect.
You have supported or played alongside some of this country's best including Ian Moss, King Stingray, Ruel and What So Not, who else would you like to share a stage with? Who would give you the ultimate 'Fanboy' Moment?
I think Ed Sheeran would be pretty crazy, he’s a singer/songwriter who plays stadiums and that is incredibly inspiring.
You've been on the rosters of Beyond The Valley and Port Fairy Folk Festival, are festival appearances something you would like to do more of and if so, which ones are on your bucket list?
Woodford Folk Festival, Queenscliff Music Festival, Glastonbury….
What was the moment you realised that you could make money as an artist, and this was now your career?
The moment was definitely the first fully original gig I did and made money off of it for sure.
“I bought a 1957 Maton Alver”
What was the feeling of "making it" like and what was the first thing you bought from your musical income?
I bought a 1957 Maton Alver that I purchased only to hang on the wall at home and it cost me $60 from a vintage store. I’ve written so many songs on that guitar.
Who in your crew or team deserves a shout out but never gets one? And what is it they do that keeps your world turning?
My MD is Cooper Lower, I’ve written many songs with Cooper and I think he is one of the most slept-on lyricists in the Australian industry. He’s doing a similar thing to me so we are able to lean on each other and provide support.
Do you have a message for the Flynn Gurry fans and supporters?
