Ellery Cohen releases his Demons
Melbourne alt-pop artist Ellery Cohen has continued to deliver with his new track ‘Demons’. Captivating and catchy, ‘Demons’ is another step up the ladder in Ellery’s rise to fame which came to abrupt halt during the lockdown’s Melbourne was subjected to is now free to soar sky high. We spoke to this genuine, down to earth, and all round nice guy about the new song, his Synthy-Pop sound, and what it’s like to hear yourself while shopping at Kmart.
For those that haven’t heard your music before, how do you describe your sound? What genre label do you put on yourself?
I want to make music that is super relatable to normal people, I write about my life and hope that people have experienced similar situations.
I think it's synthy pop, I really love artists like OneRepublic, Ben Rector & Charlie Puth
You have just released your first track for 2022, 'Demons'. Tell us about your new song? What does the song mean to you?
I wrote ‘Demons’ over a few writing sessions with a few different people, and I wanted to talk about the struggle we all feel in life, it's about getting older and the sense that sometimes we aren't exactly where we want to be in life but accepting the things and struggles in life that we can't change. Everyone has demons, some are just better at hiding them.
'Demons' has an accompanying music video, who came up with the concept for the video? Were there any memorable moments during the making of it?
Filming the video was super fun and I worked with an amazing director Daniel Kelaart. The most memorable part of the filming was setting the security alarm off at one of the offices we filmed in. Unsure of how we did this and still hoping they never fine us for it.
Do you play a part in the production side of your music?
I’m super involved in the creation of the music, but I leave the production to my amazing producers Michael Best & Ezekiel Fenn of ENTENTE music. These guys who are also in my live band are next level, I owe all my success to them.
What does the writing / creative process look like for you?
The writing process for each song is so unique and different. For ‘Demons’, I flew up to Sydney for a writing session with my wonderful friends Arna and Vanessa of “The No Frill Twins”. Once just hanging out we seemed to just be vibing on a similar wave and it turned into the first few verses of ‘Demons’.
We started with the first line “I try so hard to find my place”
Can we expect an Ellery Cohen full length album out soon?
I’ve got new music coming and super excited to be releasing a full-length EP very very soon
2020/21 were years full of uncertainty and change, especially for you and your fellow Melbournians. For some the years came as a blessing, for some a curse. How do you rate your Covid years?
Covid got Melbourne so hard, and like many I just focused on one day at a time. I relied on my family and friends to get me through.
The safety of my community, family and friends was my only focus.
You're doing some live shows to introduce audiences to 'Demons'. Are you glad to be getting back to performing in front of a real crowds?
I couldn’t be more excited to finally be on stage again after Covid, I think it’s gonna be a strange sight from stage seeing no masks but I’m so excited to see how people respond the new songs
You have been in the industry for over 10 years. In your journey as a musician have you changed? Is life much different for you from when you started out?
I honestly take every day at a time, for me I want to grow every single day as a person and over the years as a musician I have changed in the same way, for me I just want to be making music that I really love that means something.
If you weren’t a musician what else would you be doing now?
Maybe a professional ice-cream taster
How did you get your start in music?
I grew up playing drums in my local church and my passion for music started there
Where was your first gig? Was it a success or flop?
I Remember doing a talent show at like 14 and covering the song hero by Enrique Iglesias, from memory it was my best performance ever.
What’s been the highlight in your career so far personally? And why?
The first time I heard my song on National radio almost didn’t feel real.
Also shopping at Kmart and hearing it was pretty wild too
Who in your crew or team deserves a shout out but never gets one? And what is it they do that keeps your world turning?
TOO MANY PEOPLE!!
My producers at ENTENTE, my publicists at On The Map and Frank Varasso who is the reason my songs get heard. Honestly without the support team I have there would be no music, so I’m forever grateful for my team and most importantly every single person who’s listened to my music
What's next for Ellery Cohen? what's in the works for you?
