Nathan Cavaleri is a Man on Fire
Revered Australian artist Nathan Cavaleri has announced a 26 date tour in support of his new album ‘Miracles’, which explores fresh elements of alternative rock, psych blues, surf rock melodics, funk and swagger alongside Cavaleri’s smooth vocals and mind boggling guitarwork. We caught up with Nathan to ask him about ‘Miracles’, the showcasing tour and what the future holds.
Congratulations on the release of your new album, Miracles. What can fans expect from this new body of work?
Songs that speak of my own personal experiences as well as those I’ve observed. From mortality to relationships, alienation to escapism. Sometimes we go down into the deep blue and other times we’re jet burning high in the sky. Musically I’m subconsciously drawing on my favourite artists and sounds that venture into the alternative space but in some way are still anchored to my favourite types of blues. I’m so proud of this album. It’s unapologetically true. It took a lot for me to create from that space.
Is Miracles a continuation of your 2020 album 'Demons' or an evolution?
I’d say so! I created “Demons” at a time when I was mentally unstable and not knowing whether I’d return to the stage. It was a time of re-discovery and testing newly acquired knowledge. I created “Miracles” at a time that is about trust in the self and taking action - Leap with faith!! It wasn’t easy to stay in that mindset but it has been the basis of every creative and business decision made and has so far served me well!
Do you have a favourite track or one that is particularly special to you off Miracles? and if so why?
It really depends how I’m feeling. They’re all incredibly special to me. “Go Quietly” and “Gone To God” are some of the deepest songs I’ve written and are an expression of some of the darkest times I’ve had - I still have those moments. BUT when I want to bang, “Man On Fire” and “Comfort Zones” are INSANELY heart pumping. They go off live and problems fly away!
Your hitting the road for a 26 date tour to showcase the album live for fans. What does a live Nathan Caverleri permanence entail?
It’s so much more than a good “play”. It’s a pretty cathartic trip to lots of different places with songs brought together by stories. Whilst there are a lot of intimate moments, it cranks!!! And even though I’ve stylistically ventured outside of the blues, I still feel urges to rip into a 5 minute rockin blues solo too!
Is it important to you to take the shows to the regional towns as well as the bigger cities?
I play where the love is whether big cities or tiny rural towns! Fortunately we scored a government grant (RISE) that affords us the expenses to travel to more remote destinations too. Very grateful.
What's the best and worst things about touring and being on the road?
I still face a few demons on the road. It’s getting easier but they’re still there. The best part is the liberation felt when I’ve faced them! New realisations and epiphanies. Through that comes some of the most joyous experiences and when it happens around a performance on stage, it feels like I’ve found home again.
Who in your crew or team deserves a shout out but never gets one? And what is it they do that keeps your world turning?
Mel Waring and Will Hollonds. Mel is my filmographer, editor & assistant. Will is my agent. Both are my good friends. When I was in the black, I set an intention that anyone on my team needs to be guns at what they do but also have aligned values that enable us to be there for one another.I have that team and am so grateful. I know they’ve got my back and I have theirs. There’s no way in the world I’d be doing what I’m doing now without them.
What's comes next for you? Is there anything in the pipeline for when you finish your extensive tour?
Right now my focus is the tour and making that the best experience for the audience as well as myself and the team. I am however excited about testing new markets OS. I have my eye on NZ but still researching. Where are our people? Such a great question for any muso to ask themselves!
