Sydney’s Sooks
Sydney, Indie rock band, The Sooks have released their brand new song ‘Burn Me Out’. A song filled with a driving rhythm, punchy guitar riffs and captivating vocals, ‘Burn Me Out’ sums up the feeling of alienation and disconnection from the world, and the frustration that come with feeling stuck in a rut. We caught up with Corey from The Sooks to ask him about the new single, the band’s formation and that name.
The Sooks's music is labelled as Indie, is this the genre box you place yourselves in?
It’s hard to say. Indie’s a term that gets thrown around a lot these days but I guess we would probably fall under the banner of indie rock.
Your latest single release is 'Burn Me Out' Tell us about your new song? What does the song mean to you?
We wrote ‘Burn Me Out’ really quickly. Probably in less than 20 minutes or so. Myself and Keenan were just jamming on two acoustic guitars and came up with the lyrics and chords and melody straight away. And we thought it sounded pretty good so we recorded it the week after.
I guess the song’s about being a bit run down and burnt out and just that feeling in general.
What was the songwriting process for song? Did the song turn out how you envisioned originally?
We were trying to go for surf rock sound with this song and I think we got there in the end. Jack Nigro, our producer, really brought the song to life though and he made it sound great.
Do you have a favourite part or line from 'Burn Me Out'?
My favourite part of the song would probably be the last chorus. It’s a bit punchier then the rest and really hits home I reckon.
Were there any memorable or standout moments during the making of the song?
The recording process was really fun. We recorded the song in Sonora Studios with our producer Jack, and had a great time there. It was fun trying out new tones and experimenting with new sounds and ideas
Are there any shows planned where fans can come se you live?
Our next Sydney show is at the Lady Hampshirite supporting Lyall Moloney! We’re really keen for that one.
You played the Indie 500 Festival & the Noir City Mini-Festival. Are there any more festival appearances scheduled for the upcoming Australian festival season?
None as of yet but definitely keen to play some mini fests again cos they’re really fun.
Will we see an Ep or full length The Sooks album out soon or will you be just concentration on single releases for now?
We should have a new single out in a couple of months. And hopefully an ep next year!
Do you as a band or as individual members play a part in the production side of your music?
Unfortunately none of us know anything about production haha. But would definitely love to learn one day.
Is there a story behind the name 'The Sooks'?
I think we were just sounding out names one day at practice and we thought The Sooks had a nice to ring to it so we decided to stick with it.
How did The Sooks come to be? wWhat is the history of the formation of the band?
We formed at the end of high school. We’d always wanted to start a band and so we just got stuck into it as soon as we could afford to buy instruments and amps and whatnot.
Who in your crew or team deserves a shout out but never gets one? And what is they do that keeps your world turning?
Would probably have to be our mates War War and Will for always helping us move gear into venues
What's next for The Sooks? What cans fans look forward to?
Should be dropping two more singles this year and then an ep at the start of next year. We’re sooo keen for that so stay tuned!
