Sydney singer-songwriter, The Nomadic, is preparing for the release of his sophomore album, ‘New Horizons’, which is due out this Friday, the 14th of December. After weting our appetite with the highly successful single ‘Marie Antionette’ we know he has an epic body of work ready to unleash into the world. We caught up with The Nomadic to ask him about the inspiration for his music, the new LP, and the differences in the indie rock scene in New York compared to Sydney.

How do you describe your sound to those who haven’t heard your music before? Who do you compare yourself to?

I would definitely say indie/alternative rock, Americana. There is definitely a Britpop influence there! In later years I have been influenced by Americana bands like the War on Drugs, The Killers, The National, Phosphorescent, Tom Petty, and Bruce Springsteen.

You have just released your new single ‘Marie Antoinette’, Tell us about your new song. What inspired the track?

It is a song about love, loss, forgiveness, life changes and moving on! It captures the idea of a relationship that is almost there- but not quite! You both have to go away and do some work and in the end, sometimes “crisis can be good for you” I wanted that to be the last lyric of the album “New Horizons” because it highlights the idea that we never really know what is around the corner for us! We just have to keep moving in the direction we want to go.

What came first the lyrics or the music? Were there any hurdles in the song’s creation?

I think the best Nomadic songs always come together at the same time! Lyrics, chords, melody! There were not really any hurdles in making the song- it was more just exciting to see how we came together in the studio to develop the arrangement and execution of the song.

fans can expect an album with a mix of slower, introspective songs and faster, anthemic rock!

‘Marie Antionette’ features on your forthcoming album ‘New Horizons’, when is the new body of work out, and what can fans expect?

Yes, Marie Antoinette will be the final song of a 14-track album “New Horizons”. We have already released a few singles this year (Treading Water, All Changed, First Light, Don’t Give Up on Your Dreams, Hearts and Minds) so fans can expect an album with a mix of slower, introspective songs and faster, anthemic rock!

Is the ‘New Horizons’ a continuation of your 2022 LP ‘My Mind Is Racing' or an evolution?

I would say it is an evolution of our sound! I relocated back relocating back to Sydney in 2022 after years playing the New York City indie rock scene. I teamed up with Dan Frizza for New Horizons and worked with some of the best Aussie rock talent, with Miles Thomas (Lior, Ronan Keating, Montaigne) on drums, Oliver Thorpe (The Whitlams, Matt Corby, Meg Mac) on guitar, and Brendan Clark (Meg Mac, Montaigne, Jack River) on bass. There is a clear evolution towards a War on Drugs, The National kind of sound!

we will do some touring in 2025! Starting with Sydney, NSW and then expanding from there!
— The Nomadic

Are there plans to tour after the album’s release?

Yes, hopefully, we will do some touring in 2025! Starting with Sydney, NSW and then expanding from there!

You moved back from New York in 2022, after being a part of the indie rock scene in the Big Apple, so how does Sydney’s scene differ? What are the advantages and disadvantages of being back in Australia making music?

New York is awesome- very welcoming and inclusive and reflects the ‘can do‘ attitude of the city! Sydney is also such a cool city! I probably feel independent musicians here have to work a bit harder logistically and culturally to build momentum. There are of course some amazing spots to play!

there is a lot of ‘untapped gold’!
— The Nomadic

Do you think the 25% minimum quota of Australian music on our radio stations is a fair number given the ever-expanding talent pool we have in this country? Would you like to see that number increased or even a dedicated Aussie station?

Yeah, it would be good to see that ratio increase, and just as importantly feature independent artists where there is a lot of ‘untapped gold’!

Where would you like to see The Nomadic Project in five years? What do you hope you have achieved?

I think my goals are simply to have fun making music and release/ promote it so people can enjoy it! And to keep enjoying the journey!

Who in your crew or team deserves a shout-out but never gets one? And what is it they do that keeps your world turning?

Dan Frizza's production is pretty amazing! He's worked with some of the best in the business but is very humble and unassuming!
