Jacksonville indie outfit flipturn have landed in Australia for their Burnout Days Tour and their performances at the Rolling Sets festival. This will be the first time tour the five-piece will visit our shores, giving fans the chance to hear tracks like ‘August’, ‘Sad Disco’ and ‘Swim Between Trees’ live. We caught up with the members of flipturn to chat about what they are looking forward to on their trip downunder, their collab with our Old Mervs and from their message for Aussie fans.

Firstly, fans have gone a bit crazy with the announcement that flipturn is finally heading to Australia in November for a headline tour, have you had a big reaction from your Aussie fans that you are on your way?

Dillon: Yes, people have been asking us to come there for some time now! It is hard to please everyone though because once we announced we were coming there were also comments asking us to come to cities we didn’t have on the tour. So it looks like we will have to make some return trips after this one!

What has made now the right time to head downunder for the very first time?

Tristan: I feel like the timing for US bands traveling to Australia is always such a situational thing. We’ve had a couple tours over in Europe and we’ve been looking to get to Australia for a long time - so after the last few years of heavy touring in the US, we’ve found ourselves in a good place to finally come!

our agent sent over some of Old Mervs music to check out and we became big fans

In honor of your first tour of Australia you have teamed up with loved local lads Old Mervs for a new version of your track 'Burnout Days’. How did this collaboration come about?

Dillon: We have the same booking agent in the US! When we were looking for someone to feature on the track, our agent sent over some of Old Mervs music to check out and we became big fans. We thought their style fit the song perfectly and turns out we were right because Dave absolutely crushed the verse we gave him.

Lollapalooza! What was that experience like? Was performing at one of the biggest festivals in the world everything you thought it would be?

Dillon: Lollapalooza was truly a dream come true. Chicago always shows up for flipturn sets and this one wasn’t any different. The energy was incredible and we felt super welcome. We can’t wait to be back again one day!

The lineup at Rolling Sets is insane, and we’re honored to be a part of the festival.
— Madeline - flipturn

Speaking about festivals, while in the country you will be playing the two Rolling Sets events, what are you expecting from an Aussie Festival?

Madeline: I’m expecting a super fun, high energy set! The lineup at Rolling Sets is insane, and we’re honored to be a part of the festival. I can’t wait to experience summer in Australia.

Your headline tour sees you playing three shows along our East Coast, what makes a show set different to a festival set? Are your preparations different?

Mitch: We try to play songs that fit the environment, also the length of the set changes it .

Which of your songs do you think will get the biggest response from Aussie punters and why?

Madeline: I think our song ‘Burnout Days’ will be a super fun one!! It’s such a fun summery-vibe, and I think the crowd will love hearing it!

We’re gonna leave every ounce of energy we have on these stages
— Devon - Flipturn

What else can fans look forward to from a flipturn live show?

Devon- We’re gonna leave every ounce of energy we have on these stages. So lots of sweat, lots of screaming at the top of our lungs, & of course a lot of dancing.

Apart from your Passport, what is the one essential you have to pack for an international tour?

Mitch: A labubu and jalapeño.

Seeing as this will be your first visit to Australia, what touristy things are you hoping to do while in the country?

Madeline: I’m excited to explore the cities and drink some delicious coffees! I love sight-seeing and checking out the area around the venues to get a sense of the city.

I have no idea what any of those are but I would try anything
— Tristan - flipturn

Any of our culinary delicacies you especially want to try? Vegemite, Tim Tams or a Lamington?

Tristan: In complete honesty, I have no idea what any of those are but I would try anything. I love to try new food!

Who in your crew or team deserves a shout out but never gets one? And what is it they do that keeps your world turning?

Devon - Our Playback Tech, Alex! He’s basically the 6th member of the band & deserves a lot more credit. He keeps the show on the rails!

Do you have a message for the Australian flipturn fans and supporters?

Dillon: Get rowdy at the show
