Local The Neighbour’s Top 4 artists who made me love indie and quit jazz

  1. Bon Iver! Specifically the Bon Iver, Bon Iver album. Maybe it’s not considered indie per se, but for a good 3 years I was listening to music that usually had no singing, and hearing that record really fused my love of incredible instrumentation and arrangement with great songwriting. I was living in Los Angeles at the time, studying jazz at UCLA, and I remember whenever I finished class, I’d walk home and listen to that album. I played it to death! On average I’d listen to it all the way through probably twice per day, it was nuts but I couldn’t get enough of it.

  2. Alex G. The man is amazing! Hearing House of Sugar really shocked me in the best way. I think when things are new and interesting they have a shocking effect, and hearing that album for the first time definitely freaked me out. I actually didn’t like it and then one day I just had the songs stuck in my head and suddenly couldn't stop listening to it. The songs were just amazing and the production really appeals to me, especially when it’s mostly done by Alex himself!

  3. Travis Barker’s return to the mainstream haha (thank you Kourtney Kardashian - I’m eternally grateful). Not much to say about this! I was a big Travis Barker/Blink 182 fan when I was in primary school and most of high school too! I’m glad they’re back and they make me want to rock.

  4. Dayglow. I think early on when I first started making this, I was listening to the Fuzzy Brain album a lot! I haven’t really dug deeper into the recent records, but I really loved how optimistic his music sounded, just sonically it always gave me a good feeling and I really enjoyed it. Hearing that album definitely made me think “I’d like to make music like that one day”. It’s just music that I like to have on and makes me feel good, which I think is great!
