Lunar Electric 2022
On a beautifully clear day , a crowd of 10,000 plus descended on Parramatta the Location of the first Lunar Electric shows for 2022 with Parramatta Park providing a perfect location for a multi stage event like Lunar.
While skin wasn’t as prevalent as at previous events it was still on display but the puffer jacket was the most popular fashion item which was a smart choice as temperatures dropped to a freezing 8 degrees by the end of the night.
The theme of this years Lunar Electric was the Three S’s - Shoey’s, Surprises and Special Guests. The now famous Aussie occa icon the schoey was happening on stage and amongst the crowd through out the event. The surprises came via the artists crashing each other’s sets making one off performance combos that punters lapped up and the specials guests included a slew of names not included on the bill including the legend SAVAGE, AMARNI, Ay Huncho, Hooks, and Ahmed Dib. Crowd participation was also big through the entire event. In a sign we are moving past the fear of Corona , artists were leaving the stage to get up close and personal with fans, shaking hands and interacting with those clambering at the barricades.
The police presence was huge with teams scattered throughout Parramatta Park and included mounted officers on horseback, and they were surprised by how well behaved the punters were with only one person escorted out that we witnessed. For a crowd of this size, that is a good reflection of the standard of behavior from everyone on the day. A large medical tent was on site but most attendees were attending under their own steam, not being carried or escorted by friends. So again well done to the crowd. Medical teams were also easy to locate with big numbers present but again we only saw one person receiving treatment. This looked due more to a fall as opposed to drug or alcohol intoxication.
Purple Stage
Opened by Movemint, The purple stage housed the internationals guests Darude & Carnage and well as the local cream Hooligan Hefs, Kerser, Tigerlily, Illy, Pendulum and Chillin It. Party starters Bread Gang did what the do best and drew the arriving crowd down to the main stage , with some not leaving their prime positions for the rest of the event. The big hill that lead down to the dancefloor ensured everyone got a great view of the stage regardless of weather they were at the front of the railings or sitting with their friends. The VIP section was also located here and ensured the VIP’s got to watch the big stage without their view being obscured.
Pink Stage
The smaller of the two stages had an audience just as dedicated as its counterpart, and delivered thumping bass with a splattering of solid RnB to the punters that made camp there. Opened by Tennyson, it was EDM heavyweights Nick Skitz, Dimatik & Godlands that produced a vibe that kept fans on their feet. Donny Palmer, Kobie Dee, Joseph Scott and Nick Saddy were but great additions to the lunar bill and have hopefully secured their spots on future festival lineups. It was here we saw NZ megastar SAVAGE join Dimatik and Restricted to deliver their song ‘The Chant’ which was probably one of the biggest moments of the festival as attendees had now idea it was coming.
Highlights
The surprise appearance of SAVAGE was epic. Hooligan Hefs provided two of the stand out moments for us, firstly when he selected a fan(Sorry forgot your name) to join him on stage to smash out a song which the guy nailed. The other, was when Hefs went Acapella during a power issue which happened a couple of times as the temperature plummeted, showcasing the consummate professional he is, big props goes out to him. Finally in a move to engage with the crowd from behind the sometimes isolating DJ setup, Darude wrote on a white board conveying messages of '“Hello” and “Thanks” among others to the masses of fans before him. It was a small gesture but an extremely classy one.
Thanks goes to the few artists that took a moment to acknowledge the media (including us) that was trying to get a photo or two, not an easy task with so much energy being served up onstage.
Big thanks to Intensive Events - Simon, Katrina & Shaun for having us along & looking after us so well. We already excited for Lunar Electric 2023 😉
