Jet -20th Anniversary of Get Born Tour
The Sunken Monkey, Erina, NSW - 31/05/24
A Resounding Tribute at The Sunken Monkey
As the autumn leaves bid their final farewell, Jet ignited the outdoor stage at The Sunken Monkey in Erina on May 31, 2024, commemorating two decades since the release of their monumental debut, ‘Get Born’. The setting was perfect—crisp yet comfortable, teeming with an audience that filled the venue to the brim, the looming threat of rain doing nothing to dampen the spirits of those gathered.
Jet’s choice to play ‘Get Born’ in its entirety was a bold homage to their roots, thrilling long-time fans and newcomers alike. The evening kicked off with a surprising twist, starting with newer tracks like ‘Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is’, ‘She's a Genius’, and ‘Black Hearts (On Fire)’, setting a high-energy tone that would only escalate as the night progressed.
As the iconic riffs of ‘Last Chance’ transitioned into ‘Are You Gonna Be My Girl’, the crowd erupted. This track, emblematic of Jet’s raw rock energy and catchy beat, had fans jumping and singing along in a collective frenzy, underlining its undying appeal. The performance of ‘Look What You’ve Done’ was especially memorable; lead vocalist Nic Cester leaped into the photography pit and serenaded fans up close, his voice rich with emotion, drawing cheers and sing-alongs from an enchanted crowd.
The night wasn’t just about high-energy rock anthems. The performance of ‘Move On’ highlighted the band’s sophisticated harmonies, weaving a mellower, reflective vibe into the setlist. ‘Lazy Gun’ was rendered beautifully, showcasing Jet’s ability to balance rock vigour with lyrical depth.
Throughout the evening, the influence of bands like The Rolling Stones and The Beatles was palpable in Jet’s music—hints of bluesy rock and 60s pop-rock undertones that have shaped their sound. This blend of old-school rock with a modern twist has enabled Jet to create a timeless feel in their music, which resonates strongly two decades later.
The encore brought further excitement with hits like ‘Shine On’ and ‘Rip It Up’, extending the night’s magic. ‘Shine On’ in particular, was a poignant tribute to the band's journey, filled with personal losses and triumphs, a reminder of their brotherly bonds and resilience.
Jet’s performance at The Sunken Monkey wasn’t just a concert; it was a journey through the past, a celebration of a seminal album, and a demonstration of the band's lasting impact on the rock scene. As they played the final chords of ‘Rip It Up’, it was clear that Jet had not just revisited their roots; they had breathed new life into them, ensuring that their sound would continue to inspire and excite for generations to come. This night was a definitive proof that Jet, like their influences, are not just part of rock history—they are timeless.
