Tame Impala - Deadbeat Tour
Tame Impala brought the Deadbeat Tour to Rod Laver Arena, and it was a reminder of just how far Kevin Parker's project has come. What started as a psychedelic rock project from Perth has grown into something that sits comfortably between indie, electronic music and full-scale arena pop. With a catalogue that spans more than a decade, there was plenty to work with, and the show brought together the band's newer direction with the sounds that made them such a big name in the first place.
The production was a huge part of what made the night work. Lasers, psychedelic visuals and constantly changing lighting gave the arena a completely different feel, with the visuals adding another layer to the music rather than simply sitting in the background. It was colourful, immersive and a good fit for the way Tame Impala's sound moves between hazy, atmospheric sections and much heavier electronic beats. The scale of the production suited the music without losing that slightly strange, dreamlike quality that makes the project stand out.
Opening the night was Australian electronic producer Ninajirachi, whose glitchy, high-energy sound was a great fit for the tour. Her set brought a different kind of energy to the arena, mixing intricate electronic production with a more club-focused sound. It was a strong addition to the lineup and a nice way to introduce the crowd to another side of Australia's electronic music scene.
One of the most interesting things about Tame Impala is how the music has evolved without losing its identity. The live show reflects that, moving between guitar-driven psychedelia and huge electronic passages without feeling like two completely separate projects. Parker's attention to sound and production has always been central to his work, and that attention carries through into the live experience.
With Deadbeat, Tame Impala are clearly leaning further into electronic music, but the older material still fits naturally alongside it. The Melbourne show brought those different eras together in a way that made sense, backed by production that gave the music room to feel as big as it sounds on record.
At Rod Laver Arena, Tame Impala delivered a visually impressive, musically varied show that highlighted both how much the project has changed and why it continues to connect with such a wide audience
