Health - Australia 2.0.2.6
Hobart’s The Odeon Theatre felt like the perfect old beautiful room for Health to drip with their juxtaposition of melody crashing into pure abrasive glitchy metal.
Health are an outfit out of L.A with a strong connection to playing to Australian crowds, playing Knotfest early last year and in 2023 performed right here at The Odeon Theatre as part of Dark Mofo.
Opening the night was King Yosef. A Portland based industrial hardcore project by Tayves Yosef Pelletier. From the opening drop King Yosef's sound smashes you in the face like you've been hit by a bus. Razor sharp abrasive high end electronics cut into bone shattering deep bass. King Yosef is totally brutal and absolutely addictive.
Next up a favourite of Australian synth wave crowds , dark synth electro industrial wizard Perturbator. Paris based Perturbator toured Australia back in 2023 and built a loyal Australian fan base. Massive, almost fit inducing lights and this dystopian wall of noise send you into what feels like a fever dream, full of cyberpunk noise and shining bright flashes. Perturbator sits nicely in the middle , not quite the full assault of King Yosef and not Health's wet dream. Perturbator takes you on a journey into the future and gets your heart pounding and your feet moving.
Time for Health
Vocalist Jake Duzsik walked onto a foggy neon lit stage to a crowd of sweaty dripping Health fans. The crowd screamed and moved in close and I knew for the next hour my senses would be melting. Health has this enormous sound that isn’t easy to pin down, they can be brutal and dark but also airy and catchy. They create these synthwave sexy beats and echo harmonious almost androgenous vocals through them.
Health has this knack of taking some pretty bleak themes and imposing their dark-wave metal on you in a way that could be akin to Stockholm syndrome, feeling sexy and dancing to thoughts of your impending doom is another juxtaposition that describes Health perfectly. From vibe cop to trash decade and hateful to tracks like crack metal and dont kill yourself they played an array of music from their last few albums leaving fans frothing at the mouth and melting into the floor.
No fake encores, just a big set list and when they were done bass player Johnny jumped into the crowd to hug everyone.
