The Brand New Heavies’ - ‘Brother Sister’ Anniversary Tour
Jaron Jay
Sydney, February 14, 2025 – The Enmore Theatre was alive with energy as The Brand New Heavies commemorated the 30th anniversary of their seminal album ‘Brother Sister’. Despite city-wide train strikes, a diverse crowd filled the venue, eager to experience the band’s signature acid jazz and funk grooves. The evening kicked off with a dynamic performance by Australia’s own Jaron Jay. His charismatic stage presence and soulful melodies set the perfect tone, priming the audience for the main act.
Original members Andrew Levy (bass) and Simon Bartholomew (guitar and vocals) were joined by the phenomenal Angela Ricci on lead vocals. The ensemble was rounded out by Luke Harris (drums), Matt Steele (keyboards), Bryan Corbett (trumpet), Richard Beesley (saxophone), and backing vocalists Mims Grey (also on percussion) and Kerry Arandel.
In a rare and commendable move, the band performed the Brother Sister album in its entirety, following the original track order—a testament to the music’s enduring quality and ability to stand the test of time. Classics like ‘Dream On Dreamer’, ‘Midnight at the Oasis’ and ‘Back to Love’ were delivered with precision and passion, showcasing the band’s enduring musicianship.
Midway through the set, Angela Ricci shared a personal anecdote, revealing that ‘Brother Sister’ was the track that introduced her to the band, courtesy of a compilation album her father had gifted her. Throughout the performance, each band member had the opportunity to shine with captivating solos. Andrew Levy’s bass grooves, Simon Bartholomew’s guitar riffs, Matt Steele’s keyboard melodies, and Luke Harris’s drum rhythms each brought the audience to roaring applause, highlighting the individual talents that contribute to the band’s cohesive sound. The lighting, sound, and production crew also deserve praise for their exceptional work. They enhanced the overall experience with impeccable acoustics and visually stunning effects that complemented the band’s performance.

The audience’s fervent calls for an encore were soon rewarded. Returning to the stage, Andrew Levy swapped to a striking sparkly blue five-string Warwick bass, teasing the crowd with, “You know what’s next when this bass comes out,” before launching into ‘You Are The Universe’. The encore continued with spirited renditions of ‘Stay This Way’ and ‘Dream Come True’, leaving attendees in high spirits. An unexpected yet delightful moment occurred during the encore's final song. An exuberant dancer appeared on stage, moving with such energy and enthusiasm that the crowd erupted in cheers, adding an extra layer of excitement to the evening! Following the encore, Simon Bartholomew showcased his genuine connection with fans by jumping down into the audience. He distributed guitar picks, engaged in conversations, and posed for photographs, underscoring the band’s appreciation for their supporters.
For many attendees, this was their first live experience with The Brand New Heavies, and it was nothing short of transformative. The band’s tight performance, infectious energy, and genuine rapport with the audience made for an unforgettable evening, leaving fans eagerly anticipating their next return.
