The sweet sound of NECTAR

Psychedelic, indie soul band NECTAR have released their new single ‘Waiting On The World (Won’t Work)’. The song sees the young 4 piece from Perth flexing some musical muscle by channeling an extensive range of influences on the new track that also features guest vocals from Ella Pilcher. NECTAR will celebrate the release of ‘Waiting On The World (Won’t Work)’, with a launch show at Mojo’s Fremantle on Saturday, April 2, so before the lads get super busy we took the chance to ask them a few questions about the new song, signing to Sam Ford’s Tone City Records and being influenced by the great Mac Miller.

For those that haven’t heard Nectar's music before, how do you describe your sound?

Nectar's sound is probably best described as indie/soul. It has elements of a lot of different genres with nods to jazz, reggae, funk and much more. We like to keep it simple though so we'll leave the categorizing to you guys!

Tell us about your new song, 'Waiting On The World (Won't Work)', what does the song mean to you?

Waiting on the World (Won’t Work)” is a statement towards the creation of excuses and placing blame on the world around you, if you want things to happen, you have got to make them happen! We have noticed this a lot amongst ourselves particularly as emerging young artists. It is an age-old revelation that withstands the tests of time, change comes from action. Particularly at the moment it is easy to find ourselves in a slump and stagnant point in life, but that is okay, so long as you remind yourself there is light at the end of the tunnel.

joining the Tone City Label though has meant that you can expect more from us before the end of 2022

Can we expect an album soon, or will you be sticking to single releases?

For the moment there is no album on the way, joining the Tone City Label though has meant that you can expect more from us before the end of 2022, at least another single. Just between us, there may or may not be an EP to lookout for!

You have a launch show planned on the 2nd of April at Mojo's in Fremantle, WA, are there plans for more shows after the launch?

Yes! We are always in the works for the future, we have some gigs supporting some of our amazing friends in the following months after our single launch, which no doubt, you will be hearing about! We also have some exciting news on the fashion front, which we will be debuting with a headline show yet T.B.A.

Nectar is the newest band added to the Tone City Records stable of artists, are you excited to be affiliated to such a high profile label?

Being a part of the Tone Family has been an absolute blessing, we had worked with Sam Ford a few times prior, which got our foot in the door. He is such a professional, dedicated and lovely man to work alongside and it is evident he wants to build a legacy and cement us all into the Australian music scene. The other bands/artists on the roster are incredible too, all such kind souls and we are honoured to be associated with them, we are incredibly keen to  see what more comes from the Tone crew and where the music takes us all.

Tone City Records is owned by Sam Ford, what's it like to receive guidance and support from such a well
known industry name?

From the first time working with Sam it was clear to see his intentions are for the best. Ask anyone and they will vouch for that. He is incredibly driven and motivated to succeed and he has taken on an enormous amount of work with the Label and is crushing it! Being able to bounce ideas off him and the connections he has provided us with has been an immense help in establishing our name in the scene and gaining a further reach.

Do you play a part in the production side of your music?

We certainly do, all of our music has a lot of input from the whole band. Generally we have a pretty good idea of where we want the track to go in terms of the finished product. The process is quite smooth and we allow room for experimenting and take Sam's experienced opinion on board whenever we can. Once the recording stage is complete we leave it to Sam to mix, once mixed we create a list of tweaks and send it back for another mix. This goes on until we are happy with the outcome and that's what you get to hear.

You all have a connection to music via relatives, some are teachers, some are songwriters or artists themselves, does this add an extra layer of pressure to make the final product perfect before you release it? or do you seek advice from them in the early stages of writing?

In all honesty as we collaborate a lot amongst the four of us, we don't often look towards friends/relatives for assistance during the writing/recording process. Perfection in music/art is such a subjective matter and a lot of it comes down to the individual, rather than feeling pressure from the people around us, it comes from making sure each of our parts are suitable and right for the song. We work really well in that sense as we are honest with each other about how the songs are coming together, and what should go where within each track. It is nice to have a support network who love music as much as we do and immerse their lives in it too and to know that we can approach them for assistance if the-need-be!

We try to express what we are experiencing in everyday life and hopefully relate that to whoever lends an ear.

Who do you credit as your musical influences?

Musically, it would be hard to pinpoint our direct influence, as our taste combined is all over the place (in a good way), we have, however, curated a playlist on our spotify full of artists & songs that have had an impact on us individually, although there are plenty we have missed and even more yet to be discovered.
Perth has such an eclectic range of creative minds in the arts scene and it’s safe to say that we draw much more of an influence from our creative space here in little old Perth, rather than just a few sole artists.
We try to express what we are experiencing in everyday life and hopefully relate that to whoever lends an ear.

Who would be the ultimate collaboration partner for Nectar?

While there are a number of legends it would be a privilege to work alongside, we all agreed the late, great Mac Miller would be a dream come true. Mac had an extraordinary ability to turn heavy hitting subjects and simple ideas into a fine, angelic piece of art unmatched by many. Through his main catalogue of music released as Mac Miller and his alter ego’s (iykyk), Mac solidified himself as one of music’s greats and we all fell in love with his music. From the instrumentation to the relatable and witty lyricism, Mac has a tendency to nail it every time. May his music live on and he rest in peace

Who in your crew or team deserves a shout out but never gets one? And what is it they do that keeps your world turning?

We’d definitely have to say our beloved family, friends & fans who have supported us relentlessly along our ride so far! it wouldn't be possible without every single one of you.(you are all a part of the NECTAR crew💛)

What's next for Nectar? What can fans look forward to for the rest of 2022?

Gigs, gigs and more gigs! We are going back into the studio at the end of April to record our next single and have a line of T-shirts coming out! At this point I think that is just about all we can let out of the bag. If you've read this far you might've already seen that there just might be an EP around the corner but that won't be 'till later in the year. Hopefully we can see you around at a show!

  Lots of love
