Rory Marshall is SHELTER prepared

Rory Marshall is one of Australia’s most popular rising techno DJs and is known for his unique style of infused house music and killer sets. His evolving and original approach has landed him a slot on the lineup of a brand new event for Melbourne, SHELTER. SHELTER is set to take place at the Seaworks Precinct in a purpose renovated building, which will hopefully be the home of many more SHELTER’s to come. We spoke to Rory about the opportunity of playing SHELTER, what punters can expect from his set and who he is excited to see off the SHELTER line-up.

You have been announced as one of the Artists to perform at SHELTER, a unique and brand-new event happening in Sydney and Melbourne this April, are you excited to be a part of what is set to become a long-standing festival series?
I'm super excited to showcase my style of late night music at SHELTER. Big love to the team for getting me on!

How do you prepare yourself for an event like SHELTER?
I treat all my sets like a story - It's gotta have an enticing intro (beginning), some well placed moments in the story (middle) & a finale that leaves you wanting more (end).

What can we expect from your upcoming performance at this event?

Lots of my own productions (released and unreleased)!

Apart from your own, which set are you most looking forward to seeing play at SHELTER?

Really excited to catch some of the upcoming locals tbh -  always nice to see new talent pushing through the ranks. UMEK will definitely get the feet tapping too!

If you could collaborate with any artist from the SHELTER line-up, who would it be and why?

I'll say UMEK.. We both write techno but in very different styles so the end product could be really dope.

What are the best and worst parts of being on a multi artist bill? Do egos ever get in the way?

I don't really think about it to be honest.. I just focus on what I can bring to (hopefully) enhance the party for the punters!

A lot of the music I play in my sets is my own so It’s always exciting to play to new crowds

SHELTER is set to deliver a new type of audience and atmosphere than we are used to at a festival event. Are you excited to be able to share your music with people who may not be familiar with Rory Marshall?

Yep! A lot of the music I play in my sets is my own so It's always exciting to play to new crowds especially in a festival setting.

SHELTER is taking place at the purposely renovated building in the Seaworks Precinct. Does having a dedicated space help make a difference in being able to produce the best sound you can create as opposed to a multi-functional space?

A dedicated space is 10000x better than a multifunctional space and I cannot wait for game day!

Do you enjoy playing festivals and being a part of that festival scene and atmosphere?
For sure, I've had some of my best times as a punter at festivals and being able to add to that as an artist is elite!

Small intimate club style gigs and big park/stadium events are obviously quite different in the energy and audiences, which is easier to engage in with great crowd participation? Which do you prefer? Clubs or Stadiums?
Tbh, I've never played in a stadium before but I describe my music as 'Dance music for clubs' as that's where I've been influenced and played the most over the last 12 years so I would have to say intimate club shows for me.

I describe my music as ‘Dance music for clubs’

How do you categorize your sound?

Dance music for clubs.

Who in your crew or team deserves a shout out but never gets one? And what is it they do that keeps your world turning?
My housemate and one of my best mates Bourkey.. Constantly harassing the bloke to take a flick for me or listen to a particular drumline/bassline I'm working on. Might have to start giving him writers credits soon haha.

Besides SHELTER in April, what else is in store for Rory Marshall in 2022?
In terms of gigs - I have a string of solo shows locked in and a mini Australia tour with the Irish stallion Rebuke in a couple of months.

In terms of productions/releases - I have two tracks called Numbers / Pink Flamingo with William Kiss that has just came out on Carl Cox's label 23rd Century. I also have two more EP's coming out via Coxy's label again and Bush Records in the coming months. Keep an eye out :)
