Barbuto is coming to Su Casa
Mi Casa Su Casa returns with its pure electronic music lineup in 2023. The festival will once again take place in Port Macquarie on the NSW Mid North Coast, however this year’s event has moved to an even better location, closer to the town’s main beach and literally 30m from the water with views unmatched for a music festival. This year’s artists include returning acts Nick Reverse and The Ibex Switch as well as some new faces including Barbuto. MFA caught up with the internationally acclaimed Sydney-based DJ to ask him about what he has planned for Mi Casa Su Casa.
You have been announced as one of the Artists to perform at the 2023 edition of Mi Casa Su Casa happening beachside in beautiful Port Macquarie on the 28th of January, are you excited to be a part of the line-up for the second event from Su Casa Entertainment?
Extremely excited as I know the area really well and spent a lot of time up and down that coastal area however it’s been many years since I was there. I remember the beauty, the ocean and the vibe. It’s going to bring back so many memories but now we are adding a DJ set at a festival on top. For me, it’s extra special in a lot of different ways.
How do you prepare yourself for a festival set like Mi Casa Su Casa as opposed to a club set? Is there much difference in your planning?
The planning takes place usually starting from the initial booking. I create a basic folder for ideas that I build upon leading up to the event. I imagine a basic vibe for what I think the party might be based on the location, the setting and scenery and what I think the energy will be as well as the crowd. Once we are within a couple of weeks I will find out the exact set time, who is playing before and after me and start to play around with energies and emotions that should fit the party but still reflect my true personality and style. I spend about 2 to 3 hours per day previewing music that I may use in the future. For this party, I want to play some music I wrote myself as well as some special tracks I have been saving for a party like this that I knew I would play someday.
For those that haven’t heard your music before, how do you categorize where you sit in the world of EDM genres?
Techno and tech house that is fun and entertaining for everyone in the general EDM scene but still gets respected by techno purists. It’s a balance.
Do you enjoy playing festivals and being a part of that festival scene and atmosphere?
More than anything I simply enjoy playing. I am more excited to play MCSC than most festivals because of the location and the backdrop. I typically don’t book festivals because they are often just for promoters wanting to make big profits, however, for this style of the festival I am really looking forward to it.
What’s your go-to song to fill a dance floor quickly?
Right now it’s a song I wrote called D.A.T.P (Dance at the Party) It’s not out yet (there are a few short clips on my Instagram) but it’s a total floor filler and infectious. I will play it for sure!
Do you find festivals present your music to new fans or people who haven’t heard you before?
Yes, I think this should be the main motivation for artists to play at festivals.
Who in your crew or team deserves a shout-out but never gets one? And what is it they do that keeps your world turning?
My wife Jasmin, she runs everything, does all the bookings and sleeps through kick drums all night long for the past 13 years haha.
Mi Casa Su Casa is a great way to finish out January 2023. What else do you already have locked in gig-wise for 2023?
I don’t have anything locked in for 2023 however there will be a North American Tour and of course all the Sydney hot spots. My record label Mavic Music will also be starting residency night at an epic nightclub in Sydney called Oxford Art Factory and I am looking forward to taking on 2 or 3 students for coaching and guidance.
