Catching Feelings with Jordie Tomas
Australian actor and musician Jordie Tomas has launched into 2026 with the release of his latest single, Catching Feelings. Written and produced by Tomas himself, the infectious pop cut offers fans a taste of what is to come from his forthcoming debut EP, set for release later this year via Community Music. We caught up with Jordie to talk about shaping his own sound, the story behind the new track, and what listeners can expect from this next chapter.
For those that haven’t heard your music before Jordie, where do you place yourself in the genre landscape?
If you’re new to my music — hi, it’s so nice to meet you! I sit in the Pop / Alternative Pop world. I produce everything myself, which gives me the freedom to experiment and blur genres a little. It still lives in pop, but I love pushing at the edges sonically and emotionally.
You have just released your first track for 2026 ‘Catching Feelings’, tell us about the song.
CATCHING FEELINGS lives in an alternate world where everything two people feel actually gets said out loud. It tells the story of a fleeting summer romance — the unspoken tension, the lingering looks, the moment you say the thing you’re probably not supposed to say… and the inevitable letdown.
On first listen, I hope you hear the warmth and joy in it. On the second, maybe you’ll feel the yearning and heartbreak sitting underneath it all.
“The EP is a deep dive into what it feels like to be hit by an emotion so hard you feel it in your gut”
‘Catching Feelings’ is set to feature on your forthcoming EP that is due out later this year via Community Music. What else can the listener look forward to from the first your first body of work?
I’m beyond excited to share this EP. I’ve written hundreds of songs, and I’m so proud of the seven that made it onto this project. I wanted it to feel cohesive but still surprising.
The EP is a deep dive into what it feels like to be hit by an emotion so hard you feel it in your gut. Each song has its own sonic world, but they all feel like me at my truest.
What made you settle on ‘Catching Feelings’ as the first track to release off the EP?
CATCHING FEELINGS is the first song I’ve released this year, but I HOPE YOU’RE WATCHING (which came out in December) was actually the first single from the project. I loved starting with a song that almost demanded attention — it had this “well, here we go” energy that felt right.
CATCHING FEELINGS felt like the perfect way to kick off 2026. We shot a beachside music video with dancing and this beautiful cast, and it just felt like summer. Both songs live in their own storytelling worlds, which is really fun for singles.
As we move closer to the EP release, things will get more focused on the bigger picture and the full world of the project — and I’m so excited to share it with you all.
“We have a rule that whenever we grow the team, it has to be good humans first — and that was exactly what we felt with them”
How did the collab between you and Community Music come about?
My manager had been speaking to a few labels, and when he met the team at Community Music, he called me straight away and said he loved their energy. We have a rule that whenever we grow the team, it has to be good humans first — and that was exactly what we felt with them.
I’ve felt so supported from day one. I’m really grateful to have such genuine cheerleaders in my corner.
Are there plans to tour after the EP’s release?
Nothing concrete just yet, but performing live is my favourite part of releasing music — so there will absolutely be shows this year.
I’m desperate to bring this EP to life onstage. I see the world of it so clearly, and over the next few months I’ll definitely be dreaming up the best live show I’ve ever made.
“I believe if you spend time building a Plan B, someone else will out-commit you to their Plan A.”
Your bio says your love of music began at age 4, writing music by age 9 and producing at 14. Why is music so important to you and how do you think it has shaped you as a person?
I don’t know my life without music — it’s all I’ve ever known. Most days it feels like the sole reason I was put on this earth is to create, write, share, and perform.
My childhood was filled with music thanks to my beautiful parents. Piano lessons, singing lessons, dance classes — they supported every creative spark. Music is where I feel most like myself.
As a kid, people always ask what your backup plan is. I’ve genuinely never entertained one. I believe if you spend time building a Plan B, someone else will out-commit you to their Plan A. So for me, it’s always been full steam ahead.
With writing and producing your own music, do you ever struggle to be objective or do you find yourself being over-critical?
When I’m in the studio, it’s pure creative mode. I don’t judge or critique until the idea actually exists. I think people are quick to shut down ideas before they’ve even been fully formed, and I try to protect that creation time as much as possible.
When it’s time to choose what gets released, that’s when I step into a more critical mindset. It becomes about perspective and asking which songs are truly ready to live in the world. Best idea wins.
“I have a pretty intense work ethic, and it felt like the first time in my life it was truly tested”
Some readers will recognise your face or name from the BAFTA and International Emmy Award-winning ‘Nowhere Boys’, which you had a lead role in as well as contributing original music to the score. What was that experience like?
Being a teenager working full-time while finishing high school taught me so much. Seeing how much work goes into a show of that scale was incredibly inspiring.
I have a pretty intense work ethic, and it felt like the first time in my life it was truly tested and encouraged. The people I met there became lifelong friends. Luca Sardelis, who starred alongside me, actually directed the music video for Catching Feelings. Being back on set with her — but this time as adults — was really special. It was a beautiful full-circle moment.
Are there plans to return the screen in the future?
Absolutely! I have taken a big step back to focus on my music, but I’ve recently found a team that understands the relationship I want to have between acting and music. Music will always come first, but if a project feels aligned and genuinely excites me, I’ll throw myself at it!
“My younger brother hears more of my music than anyone — his bedroom shares a wall with my studio — and he very rarely asks me to turn it down, which is heroic”
Who in your crew or team deserves a shout out but never gets one? And what is it they do that keeps your world turning?
My two brothers, without question. My younger brother hears more of my music than anyone — his bedroom shares a wall with my studio — and he very rarely asks me to turn it down, which is heroic if you knew how loud it gets. My older brother is an incredible photographer. The way he captures live performance is magic. I’ll always have him shoot my shows because we can communicate mid-performance without anyone noticing. I’ll see him lining up a shot and give him a subtle countdown before hitting the moment. It’s a little dance between us.
They’re both huge cheerleaders, and I love them with my whole heart.
Do you have a message for the Jordie Tomas fans and supporters?
I know it’s been a minute between acting projects and new music, so thank you for sticking around. I’ve had the time to really build something special, and I can’t wait to share it with you.
Some of you have been here for ten years, which is wild. But honestly, it feels like we’re just getting started. I’m so excited for a lifetime of music, shows, dancing, sharing, and being alive together.
