VASSY’s Pieces for Summer

Australian-born international superstar VASSY has done it again, the Darwin native has again teamed up with EDM giants to deliver a track full of relatable lyrics and danceable beats. VASSY’s new track ‘Pieces’ is a collaboration with electronic music legends Disco Fries and Bingo Players and it’s going to set dance floors on fire this summer. We had the opportunity to talk to one of our favourite singers about ‘Pieces’, the multi-national collaboration and what is coming up in 2023 for the singer including more collab’s and more time back home in Australia.

Thanks for chatting with us VASSY, it's always such a delight to interview you.

 My pleasure always.

You have just released your track ‘Pieces’ which you have recorded with Bingo Players and Disco Fries, that's a pretty heady mix to be collaborating with, how did this joining of forces come about?

Yes, it’s such a stellar collaboration.  I had originally written the idea with a co-writer I love to work with from London.  The idea started in London and then we finished it in Los Angeles.  I was thinking to myself who would be great to work on this and to produce it.  I've always wanted to work with Bingo Players.  I'm a fan of his records and production style.  I’ve worked with Disco Fries before, we had a #1 Record on the U.S Billboard Dance Chart and on dance radio in America.  I was familiar with their work and love their production.  They have a very clean sound and are very good at textures and pop leaning finishes.  It was a magical combination between the three of us working on this record together.  After Bingo Players and I worked on it, we sent it over to the boys and they added their flavour to it and then we all went back and forth between Amsterdam, New York and Los Angeles. Literally an international affair lol ☺.

This song is about when that special person comes along that helps build you up ‘piece by piece’,.

For ‘Pieces’ what, where and when did the inspiration for the song come from?

This song is about when that special person comes along that helps build you up 'piece by piece', Most people can relate to being in a place or that moment in our life when we felt lost, broken and incomplete.  The power of love, the ability it has to inspire you and feel stronger so you can conquer anything.  It was something I personally experienced myself, having met my husband, he would be the person that helped build me up 'piece by piece’ he inspired this song in many ways. But I like to keep my songs somewhat general so that the listener can dictate their own narrative through the lyrics.

What stages did the song go through before becoming the finished track we will be dancing to this summer?

Oh yes, it started off with just vocals and piano.  Actually, one of my favourite versions :-) We then went through a couple of versions to try and get the right direction and the right vibe.  I always knew I wanted something house-leaning for this record but radio-friendly.

I wanted bouncy piano chords, thick baselines, and just soulful explosive vocals.

Disco Fries

Did you succeed in the vibe you were originally aiming for when you wrote the track, or did the song morph in ways you weren't expecting?

Yes, it’s exactly what I wanted.  It’s what I had envisioned from the very beginning.  I wanted bouncy piano chords, thick baselines, and just soulful explosive vocals.

Which lines resonate with you most? Do you have a favourite line or a particular part from ‘Pieces?’

Yes my favourite part is

“I was lonely, lost and broken and incomplete, you put me back together piece by piece, every single tear made me stronger, every single fear I had to conquer.” I just love this section and I enjoy singing it thoroughly. It resonates.

We did not know what exactly, but it was missing a little something and this is where Disco Fries came in

Can you describe the chats between you, Bingo Players and Disco Fries to bring what you were envisioning to reality, especially as you were all in different locations.

Yes, so I recorded it here in Los Angeles at a studio.  I hit up Maarten / Bingo Players and I said, "Hey I want us to work on something and I have an idea." I sent it to him, and he loved it.  He asked me what kind of direction to take the music in and I gave him a few ideas.  He worked on it and sent it back to me.  He’s very easy to work with. We went back and forth and finally found the right vibe we both loved.

It was perfect but there was something still missing.  We did not know what exactly, but it was missing a little something and this is where Disco Fries came in.  I have worked with the boys before so I know their style of work and how they craft their builds.  I knew that they would polish this record off and add their flavour to it.  They added guitar and several layers to this song that made us fall in love with 'Pieces' even more.

Bingo Players

Are there any funny or memorable stories from the making of the song?

Oh yes, there’s some memorable moments.  I’ll tell you that, LOL, I wouldn’t say they were funny.  I can’t write about it but I’m sure the boys will relay something we all had to go through.  But yes definitely some funny moments.  We joke around with the word 'pieces' now and throw it in here and there in our conversations to poke fun.

David Guetta, Showtek, Tiësto and now Bingo Players and Disco Fries. Any more collabs with huge industry heavyweights already in the works?

Yes, I do. I have some big ones coming :-) I don’t think I should reveal yet.  I also don’t want to jinx it.  But I’m really excited about one name in particular which I think Australia is going to love.   I have several collaborations in the works. But there’s one in particular it’s with an Australian artist.  That’s as far as I can say ;) .

Is there a music video coming for ‘Pieces?’

Yes, we have an official music lyric video coming.  Because we are all based in different cities, it’s made it hard to make a music video.  We have not ruled it out, but for now, we produced a cool concept and the animator is working on it as we speak and it will be ready soon :-) I think personally, it executes and delivers the feeling of the song so perfectly in a sensorial way through the animation.

What's next for VASSY? What can we expect with 2023 approaching?

I have lots of new projects on the horizon. Including new NFT releases which I love doing at the moment.  I’m also touring and doing a string of club shows in the U.S and sports events, that my agent has booked me on here in America.  There will be some shows in Australia next year and some new releases coming out in Australia.  I’m really excited to be able to spend more time in Australia working with local talent.  Because my career has been in America for such a long time, it’s nice to be able to bring it back home and work with local talent and Aussie teams.
