LOSER’s Top 4 artist influences of our new EP

Written by Craig Selak (LOSER bass player)

1. Aerosmith

I know, I know, it doesn’t seem like something we’d be drawing from, BUT, during the writing process Tim and I were in the car on tour with BUGS + VOIID and we chucked on the song ‘Jaded’ by Aerosmith. Boom. We both forgot how much we loved that song and in that moment it hit us just right. Two days later Tim had written the song ‘Hold On You’ directly inspired by that car listening experience – the power of music.

2. Brendan O’Brien

Not the kind of artist people think of as an influence, but we see Brendan O’Brien as an artist of the production world. He’s worked on some of our most favourite albums of all time and listening to how he is able to capture the true essence of an artist on their recordings was a huge inspiration to us. A lot of current Rock production is really slammed and compressed at the moment, but Brendan let’s everything breathe, and that is something we strived for on the EP while producing it ourselves.

3. The Beatles/Oasis

I’ve put these two artists together not because I think of them in the same category, but more in terms of how they influenced our EP. Both these bands use a really cool and specific style of chord progression that breaks out of the normal power chord rock style. Songs like ‘Only One’ and ‘Sunday’ are examples of how we took these kinds of chords progressions and made them our own. They kinda have a timeless sound to them and we love to write songs that sound simple on the surface, but under the hood are really technical in terms of musicality and arrangement.

4. Foo Fighters

This one is a little more obvious, but damn it’s hard to think of a better example of a modern rock band that just do it right. Their mixture of power and melody is something we’ve grown up studying, and in addition to their music, we’re also inspired by how they go about being in a band. They focus on the important things like writing good songs and touring, and less on social media and shit like that. That is how we wanna approach things too, we aren’t influencers or content creators, we’re just a band and that’s all we wanna be.
